Explanation of position, delivered by Ms Kathryn Yarlett, Advisor, Australian Mission to the Third Committee of the United Nations on the resolution on the implementation of the World Programme of Action Concerning Disabled Persons: Realising the Millennium Development Goals for persons with disabilities

Australia considers that protecting and promoting the rights of persons with disabilty is an important task for the United Nations. We wish to note that Australia signed the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities on the day it opened for signature. Australia is currently undertaking the thorough process of consultations and legislative scrunity that are necessary steps to be taken before ratification of the Convention can occur.
